St Pius X is seeking a school counsellor for the 2026 school year.  This role focuses on supporting students by creating safe and supportive environments, offering counselling and guidance and working collaboratively with teaching and support staff. 

 

Position Purpose

The Student Counsellor provides emotional, social and wellbeing support to students. This role focuses on creating safe and supportive environments, offering counselling and guidance and working collaboratively with teaching and support staff to assist students who may be experiencing personal, social, behavioural or learning challenges.

Key Responsibilities

Student Support & Counselling

  • Provide confidential, short-term counselling and wellbeing support to students.

  • Offer a safe and welcoming space for students during lunch times and breaks who may require additional emotional or social support.

  • Actively listen to students’ concerns and assist them in developing coping strategies, resilience problem-solving skills.

  • Support students experiencing challenges such as anxiety, stress, friendship or family issues, behavioural concerns, or adjustment difficulties.

  • Identify students at risk and escalate concerns appropriately.

Wellbeing Programs & Safe Spaces

  • Develop and facilitate structured and informal wellbeing programs and activities during break times.

  • Promote inclusiveness, peer connection wellbeing across the school community.

  • Ensure safe-space environments are supervised, respectful supportive.

Collaboration & Liaison

  • Work collaboratively with teachers, support staff leadership to identify and respond to student wellbeing needs.

  • Provide guidance to teaching staff on strategies to support students experiencing social, emotional, or behavioural challenges.

  • Participate in student support meetings as required.

  • Maintain strong and respectful communication with staff while upholding student confidentiality guidelines.

Record Keeping & Compliance

  • Maintain accurate and confidential case notes and documentation in accordance with school policy and privacy legislation.

  • Follow school safeguarding, child protection mandatory reporting procedures.

  • Contribute to wellbeing policies and processes as required.

Qualifications & Experience (preferred)

  • Qualifications in Counselling, Psychology, Social Work, Youth Work, or a related field.

  • Experience working with children or young people in a school, community, or wellbeing setting.

  • Knowledge of child development and wellbeing practices.

  • Understanding of trauma-informed and strengths-based approaches.
